LGV C1 Driver Training

If you wish to drive a small truck, often called a 7.5 ton lorry then you will need to gain the LGV C1 driving licence. Also, other common vehicles are also in this weight category, such as an Ambulance, Horsebox and large vans over 3500kg Gross Vehicle Weight.

At Wetherby Training we operate two Ford Transit 4.5 ton heavy weight vans, one for minibus training and one for LGV C1, they are both 2022 plates, the C1 vehicle is fully electric and extremely easy to drive due to its size and driving dynamics, the training course can be carried out in the shortest duration and therefore lowest cost possible.

We will guide you through the entire process as below, from the medical to the practical test and everything in between – providing a full wrap around service to make it a simple/comfortable managed process, avoiding any undue complication to our customers.

LGV C1 Entry Requirements

To become a LGV C1 driver you must have a valid Provisional LGV licence Category C1 To get this, you need to:

Be 18 years old or over.
Be competent in English and maths (to take the LGV theory tests).
Hold a full car licence.
Pass a doctor medical to DVLA Group 2 standards
If you are under 21 with penalty points you may not be granted an LGV entitlement.

Provisional LGV Driving Entitlement

To learn to drive LGV you must first gain the correct provisional driving entitlement on your driving licence with DVLA.

To gain the correct provisional entitlement the following process must be followed:

Book a D4 Driver Medical with www.just-health.co.uk GP completes a DVLA form D4, available online to print, search DVLA D4 form.
Complete an application to DVLA using DVLA form D2 to add additional Provisional Entitlement. D2 form not available for online download but can be ordered at www.gov.uk/dvlaforms – takes 7-10 days to arrive
Post off the DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BR completed D4 and D2 forms, also include current driving licence.
Licence should return with 28 days from DVLA and Provisional entitlements will have been updated at DVLA.

Notes

You must have received your driving licence back after step 2 before booking your Theory Tests Steps 3 and 4.

The Theory Test Module 2 doesn’t need to be taken/passed to learn to drive an LGV and take the Driving Test, this element can be postponed until after the driving test has been completed, if preferred.

LGV Theory Tests Module 1a and 1b

To be eligible to take your LGV Driving Test you must have passed the LGV Theory Tests:

LGV Multiple Choice (1a).
LGV Hazard Perception (1b).

LGV Theory Test Module 2

To be eligible to take your LGV Practical Demonstration Test – Module 4, if you want to drive for ‘hire and reward’ you must have passed the LGV Theory Test:

Theory Test Revision:

Revise for the theory tests using a website service such as www.drivingtheory4all.co.uk – purchase the LGV CPC Package.

Practical Demonstration Test Module 4

To be a professional LGV Driver you must pass the Practical Demonstration Test. This is a practical demonstration of your ability to:

Daily walk-around checks.
Ability to prevent physical risk.
Loading and security of loads.
Emergency procedures.
Loaded vehicle dynamics.
Border crossings.
Security procedures.

This practical test is normally carried out by your training school, using an LGV and Load Demonstration Securing Trolley. It involves no on-road driving, the minimum pass mark is 80% and you will be expected to demonstrate safe competent ability.

Practical Off Road Driving Exercises Module 3a

To be eligible to take your practical driving test you must complete the off road exercises:

Reverse Manoeuvre.

This test is carried out before your driving test by your instructors at our training company, using a DVSA delegated instructor/assessor. This will be carried out while on your practical driver training lessons.

This element is either pass/fail and to resit this test there must be 24 hours between tests. Its important that you are given practice on these skills before test, so we will make sure that you are prepared fully, by having plenty of practice on our private off the highway reversing area at Tockwith Airfield.

You will be given a pass certificate upon passing this test and must bring it with you to your driving test.

Practical On Road Driving Test Module 3b

To be eligible to take your driving test you must have a pre-booked appointment with a DVSA examiner, which we book as part of your training course and bring with you:

Your current Driving Licence.
Your Off Road Module 3a pass certificate.
Wear your glasses or lenses if needed for driving.
Wear suitable clothing.

The driving test will consist of different road and traffic conditions during 50-60 minutes and be carried out in a very similar way to your car driving test. You are permitted up to 12 driving faults, avoid any serious faults to pass the test, and we will ensure you practice on the local test routes as we are based just 5 minutes from the driving test centre. Your instructor will be very experienced and able to provide all the information, guidance and support required to enable you to pass your LGV C1 driving test on the first attempt.

Completion of all Modules

Upon passing all Modules you have the option at the end of Module 3b, the Driving Test to surrender your driving licence to the driving examiner.

You will receive your new driving licence showing LGV C1 entitlement so you can drive a horsebox, ambulance or 7.5 ton lorry.

This should arrive within 7 days from DVLA.

LGV Training Notes

If you only wish to drive for personal reasons, such as hobby or not carrying goods for ‘hire and reward’ you will not need to complete the LGV Case Studies Theory Test Module 2 or Module 4 Practical Demonstration Test.

Which LGV C1 Training course is right for me?

LGV Training course durations are based upon driver ability which means less capable drivers may require more training. We typically recommend that drivers initially take our 1 hour Driver Ability Test to help define the level of training required. This helps avoid unnecessary training and reduces the cost for more experienced drivers.

What is a Class 2 license?

A Class 2 driving licence allows you to drive a Category C rigid body vehicle. Category C vehicles or rigid body vehicles are vehicles where the cab and the trailer are fixed securely to each other. Having a Category C licence, allows you drive rigid vehicles over 3500kg and tow a trailer up to 750kg. If you want to drive an articulated lorry you will need a Class 1 HGV licence.

What is the process to get an LGV CE (Class 1) License?

1. You only need to hold a Car Driving Licence and have passed your Medical and Theory – we can help/book with these, (not needed if you have passed your driving test in a Class 2 or LGV C1).
